Installing SlugOS

This article describes how SlugOS can be installed as an alternative firmware on the NSLU2. This description includes only the installation procedure to make the new firmware boot on the NSLU2. The configuration and customization to your needs is described in a separate article.

Preparations

Prior the firmware upgrade starts there is need to do some preparations.

Network

Very important is to test and set up the network settings on the NSLU2 correctly before upgrading. This can be done in the webinterface of the original firmware provided by the NSLU2. By default, the NSLU2 is configured to the static IP address 192.168.1.77.

It is recomended to connect the NSLU2 directly with your PC using a crossover cable. Also the NSLU2 can be connected to the PC via a network switch.

If the PC and the NSLU2 are separated from the LAN during the upgrade procedure (see below), you must be sure that the PC is configured with a static IP address. Otherwise it will cause problems when accessing the NSLU2 afterwards.
